For a business that needs to be found by search engines and AI assistants and wants to own the result, choose a custom build. For a side project, an event, or a one-page presence you are happy to build and maintain yourself, choose Squarespace.

Squarespace is a hosted website builder: you pick a template, drag content into it, and pay a subscription for as long as the site exists. It is well designed and it works. The question is not whether it is good, but whether it fits what the business needs the website to do.

Unconventional Group's custom website builds start at $3,000 one-time for a ten-to-fifteen-page site: custom design, copy written from the client's facts, SEO and AEO engineering built in, forms wired to inbox and CRM, and the whole thing handed over outright. The running cost after handover is $50 a year for domain renewal and hosting.

When Squarespace is the better choice

Squarespace is the right call when the website is not the way the business gets customers. A restaurant that fills from foot traffic and Instagram, a consultant whose work all comes by referral, a one-off event, or a business testing an idea before it is real does not need $3,000 of engineering. It needs a clean page with the hours, the address and a contact form, and Squarespace does that in an afternoon for a low monthly fee.

It is also the right call when there is genuinely no budget yet. A Squarespace site that exists beats a custom site that is still being saved for.

When a custom build is the better choice

A custom build is the right call when search or AI visibility is how customers will find the business, when the site needs ten or more pages that each say something specific, and when owning the asset matters.

The structural difference is in what a builder cannot do for you. Squarespace will not decide which page should answer "commercial snow removal in Leduc" and make sure no other page competes with it. It will not write the copy so that the first sentence of each section is the direct answer an assistant can quote. It will not publish an llms.txt file, name the twelve AI crawlers you are allowing, or emit an Organization node whose price matches the price on the page. These are the inputs that SEO and AEO engineering work on, and on a hosted builder some of them are simply not exposed.

The ownership difference is simpler. A custom build is handed over with the code, the hosting arrangement and every login. If you stop working with Unconventional Group tomorrow, the site keeps running for $50 a year.

On price, honestly

The comparison is not "$3,000 versus cheap". It is a one-time build with a $50-a-year running cost against a subscription that runs for the life of the site and includes none of the copy, structure or engineering. Over several years the two totals can converge; only one of them ends with a site you own. Unconventional Group's own comparison, published on its website, puts a site builder at roughly $200 to $600 a year for a site the subscriber never owns; check the current Squarespace plan page for the exact figure that applies to you.

Results from either path are measured, not promised: clients typically see movement in 14 to 90 days, measured against a baseline captured before the work starts. That is a typical-results claim, not a guarantee.
